1990
August 15th, James Pollock, CEO created Duck Mountain Ambulance Care Ltd.
It began operating in the town of Kamsack with two ambulances and five staff members,
providing basic life support service.
Over the next few years time was spent developing the service. This included training
ambulance personnel and upgrading ambulances and equipment.
1994
Provided first Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) course in Saskatchewan, enabling the
Assiniboine Valley Health District to be the first district in Saskatchewan to have ambulance
and health care personnel trained in using the automatic external defibrillator. Two weeks
later the first person in Saskatchewan was saved by emergency medical technicians using an AED.
1995
Spring - Saskatchewan Ambulance Association's Outstanding Pre-hosital Care Worker of the
Year award was presented to the staff member saving the life by using the AED in 1994.
December - Duck Mountain Ambulance hosted a Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS) course for
ambulance personnel and registered nurses. This was the first BTLS course to be held in the district.
1996
Spring - CEO, James Pollock, received the Saskatchewan Ambulance Association's Long-Term
Service Award for 22 years of outstanding performance and dedication in the provision of
Prehosital emergency medical services.
August - Duck Mountain Ambulance joined the Kamsack Fire Department in hosting a Farmedic
Rescue course, from Alfred State College, New York. The Kamsack class holds one of the
highest marks in North America.
1997
January - Duck Mountain Ambulance participated in the first Advanced Emergency Medical Technician
course in the health district, bringing a higher level of service to the communities that it serves.
Spring - Duck Mountain Ambulance recognized a need in the community of Norquay for a local
ambulance service and began training Emergency Medical Responders for that community. In
September of the same year the new service was established by Duck Mountain Ambulance in
conjunction with the Assiniboine Valley Health District.
1998
March - Duck Mountain Ambulance began offering advance life support at the paramedic level.
This provided the highest level of care available to the residents of this health district.
Also, in March, Duck Mountain Ambulance received national accreditation with the Canadian Council
on Health Services Accreditation through the Assiniboine Valley Health District.
May - Executive Director, Tracy Brooks, received a certificate in Health Care Administration
with a specialty in Emergency Medical Services Administration from the University of Saskatchewan.
December - Duck Mountain Ambulance purchased a 1999 Dodge modular ambulance, Kamsack's first
brand new ambulance in 15 years!
1999
Another new ambulance was purchased - providing state-of-the-art equipment and vehicles to
the residents of the health district.
2000
The Management of Duck Mountain Ambulance participated in the Assiniboine Valley
Health District's accreditation renewal with the Canadian Council on Health Services
Accreditation.
The slogan for the year 2000 was "A Decade of Caring"
Caring is the heart of what they do and why they do it. Their actions
and their attitudes reflect this philosophy. The staff are an extended family and
they work as a team. They are dedicated to their personal and professional growth.
This caring and dedication is extended to the communities that Duck Mountain Ambulance
serves, providing professional and compassionate care to all those in need. They
strive to provide the highest standard of professionalism and care possible. They
look forward to new challenges, and are dedicated to the people that they serve.
Today
Duck Mountain Ambulance provides employment for 14 full-time & part-time employees, and 3
volunteers in the communities of Kamsack and Norquay.
It provides services to Kamsack, Norquay, Hyas, Pelly, Arran, Danbury, Whitebeech, Stenen,
Swan Plain, Veregin, Cote, Runnymede, Togo, Duck Mountain Provincial Park, Cote First Nation,
Keeseekoose First Nation, Key First Nation Livingston RM, Keys RM, RM of COTE
and RM of St. Philips.
It provides back-up service for Canora, Preeceville, Swan River, Roblin and Yorkton.
It has three ambulances in Kamsack, one ambulance in Norquay and one spare ambulance,
licensed by Saskatchewan Health.
It is a community orientated organization. It's members volunteer their time for a
number of local groups and events, as well as providing show’n’tells for schools and
many other organizations.
It provides emergency responder services for clients of the Assiniboine Valley
Health District who subscribe to home care's lifeline service.
It provides CPR and first aid training to the community, and AED training to
other health care professionals. Its members train first responders in the smaller
communities to care for and stabilize patients prior to the ambulance's arrival.
It provides child safety seat training and inspections.
Duck Mountain Ambulance is a member of the Kamsack Handi-Van committee, the
Interagency Group and the Kamsack Emergency Measures Organization. One of its
staff is a member of the Assiniboine Valley Health District's Critical Incident
Stress Debriefing (CISD) team, as well as the Tri-District CISD team. It is also
a proud supporter of the Assiniboine Valley In-School Mentorship Program.
Duck Mountain Ambulance staff are active members of the Saskatchewan Emergency
Medical Services Association (formerly the Saskatchewan Ambulance Association),
helping to create leadership and change, and promote professionalism in our
industry. They are also associate members of the Saskatchewan Association of
Health Organizations and the Saskatchewan Paramedic Association.
The management and staff of Duck Mountain Ambulance Care Ltd. would like to thank
